ALABAMA

Dothan, AL

Northview Christian Church supported the National Day by addressing the issue of teen pregnany at a recent meeting of their Virture Girl program. At the meeting, they discussed the issue of teen pregnancy and heard directly from teen mothers about the difficulties they face.

ARIZONA

Prescott, Arizona

The North Star Youth Partnership is hosted a variety of events to recognize the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy as well as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month

  • They kicked off their activities with Teen Maze, a life-size game board which was attended by over 1,000 area teens. At this event, they distributed information and wristbands to encourage the participants to take the National Day Quiz.
  • On May 7, they hosted their annual Teen Pregnancy Prevention Community Breakfast which was attended by government officials, school personnel, youth, and community leaders.  At the event, they distributed information and offered suggestions on how to educate others about teen pregnancy.  During this breakfast, they also recognized local teen leaders and peer mentors and showcased their activities and projects and announced their 3rd Annual Community Youth Advocate Award.
  • Their Teens Taking Action and Peer Mentors hosted lunchtime booths at local high schools to help educate their peers about teen pregnancy, encourage them to take the quiz, and distribute National Campaign materials.  Mayoral proclamations were made in three local communities and their annual poster contest winner was announced to the public.
  • On May 17, they will host their 7th annual Girls & Sports Day and two after prom/safe grad night events will be held.  The after prom/safe grad night winners are selected via an application process judged by our teen leaders.  They will also be conducting a "Can We Talk" workshop for parents to enhance parent/child communication and complete a teen violence campaign and host an awareness concert.

ARKANSAS

CALIFORNIA

State-wide

For the National Day, The California Alliance Concerned with School Aged Parenting and Pregnancy Prevention sent out a press release about the National Day and teen pregnancy to local media outlets. They reached out to eight regions throughout the state and had representatives available in each to answer questions and field interviews. They also included a link to the National Day Quiz on their website, included an article about the National Day in their quarterly newsletter, and sent brochures to all of their local affiliates and members.

In addition, through their regional coordinators and coalitions, they supported many local activities. For example, in San Diego, they supported a two-part event that involved a school health fair on the actual day, where teens were given the opportunity to receive information about local clinics, programs and services, and also take the quiz on-site; and a celebration for teens and families on May 10th that included lunch, a band, teen educational theater presentations, and a workshop on parent-teen communication. San Diego, California

Operation Samahan, The California Alliance Concerned with School Aged Parenting and Pregnancy Prevention, the San Diego Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition worked together to make sure that the 2008 National Day is a success in San Diego.  There were representatives from various agencies and student volunteers at many of San Diego County schools passing out information on teen pregnancy and local resources where they can receive free and confidential reproductive health care. The representatives wore shirts that promote the 3 R's (rights, respect, responsibility) developed by Advocates for Youth, as well as various giveaways and, of course, computer access to take the online test.

In addition, thet hosted a community event, "Louder Than Words" where they brought together parents and youth to help discuss sex and reproductive health.  The event featured guest speakers, live music, a youth theater troupe, and free food and prizes.  The event took place on Saturday, May 10th, at the WorldBeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park. Hemet/San Jacinto, California

Valley Wide Counseling Services, a program of My Family, Inc. (MFI) Recovery Center, is planned a Teen Health and Safety Expo in honor of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. The event took place at Hemet Valley Mall on Saturday May 3rd and included over 30 participating agencies, local theater groups, and radio stations. They offered food and raffle prizes to participants and art work from local students was displayed at the event.

Pamona and West Covina, California

East Valley Community Health Center, a non-profit organization offering free or low cost health services to the low-income and underserved populations of Los Angeles and San Bernardino County, hosted two events in honor of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. These event took place at their Pomona location on Friday, May 2nd, from 1:30pm to 7pm, and at their West Covina location on Saturday, May 3rd, from 9am to 1pm At these events, they set up booths to help educate teens on pregnancy and STD prevention, offer resources for pregnancy and STD prevention, and offered snacks, drinks, and giveaways for teen participants. In addition, offered on-site access for teens to receive reproductive services free of cost.

COLORADO

Pueblo, Colorado

The Pueblo City-County Health Department’s Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program (APPP) worked with their teen advisory committees called Health Education Led by Peers (H.E.L.P.) to plan a community-wide “The Path to Prevention” Awareness Walk.  The event was held May 3rd at the Pueblo Riverwalk.  Each H.E.L.P. group set up a booth along the Riverwalk to discuss a topic relevant to teen pregnancy, including financial and social costs, prevention measures, the importance of parents, and more.

Bridgeport, Connecticut

Greater Bridgeport Adolescent Pregnancy Program, Inc. and their Life Choices Project Afterschool Program sponsored a health fair at Bullard Havens Technical School in Bridgeport, Connecticut on May 1, 2008. They shared information about the National Day and encouraged teens to take the online quiz. They also shared information about resources from their program and other local service providers with their youth.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Washington, DC

On Tuesday May 6th, in recognition of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the Division of Adolescent & Young Adult Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center dedicated their two hour weekly Tuesday Academic Program (TAP) to the topic of Teen Pregnancy.  At 8am, Ms. Tininka Rahman of CNMC’s Generations Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program gave an overview of the program.  At 9am, Ms. Brenda Miller, Executive Director of the DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy spoke about Teen Pregnancy in the District.  The lectures were held in the Dr. Bear Green Room located on floor P2 in the West Wing of the Hospital.  Both events were open to the public.

Jonesboro, Georgia

On May 2nd , Greater St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church passed out fliers from the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention promoting the National Day Quiz. On the National Day (May 7), teens took the quiz during the Teen Bible Study class and participated in the discussion about abstinence. They are also planning a workshop for later in the month as well as a Youth Worship Service that will focus on teen pregnancy prevention.

 

Monroe, Georgia

For the National Day, Dream Girls Inc:  Every Single Mother Deserves a Second Change sent a press release about the National Day and teen pregnancy to local media outlets.   They also set up two laptops for local students to take the quiz.  Each student’s name was entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card to wal-mart.  They also passed out pizza and made staff avialble for for questions.

ILLINOIS

Chicago, Illinois

Mujeres Latinas en Acción, a community-based organization in Chicago’s South Side that provides services to Latinas and their families, and their program for Latina teens, Proyecto Juventud, promoted the National Day with the following activities:

  • On May 6th, several teens from the Proyecto Juventud program hit the streets (see photo below) and promoted the Quiz by passing out National Day bracelets and pens.
  • On May 7th, Proyecto Juventud participants took the quiz together and used the National Day Discussion Guide to talk about decision-making skills, relationships, safe-sex, abstinence, and other issues raised in the quiz.
  • Teens from Proyecto Juventud also invited their friends to take the quiz by sending them a link to the Quiz.
  • Their teen-led “Young Latinas for Power to Choose” (YLPC) campaign, which seeks to increase awareness and education in the Latino community about parental notification and young women’s reproductive rights, linked to the National Day Quiz from their MySpace page (www.myspace.com/younglatinas4power2choose) and added the National Day Widget, too.

INDIANA

Crawfordsville, Indiana

Crawfordsville High School got students involved in the National Day and created a lot of buzz in their community around the National Day. They worked with staff to allow students to take the National Day Quiz during their English class time on May 7. They offered rubber bracelets as an incentive when students brought in a page showing their final quiz score.  Students were enthusiastic about participating, and school staff overheard a lot of discussion about what students learned from the quiz and from visiting the stayteen website.  In the days leading up to the quiz and their prom, they displayed the “How Do You Score?” poster and other posters from the National Campaign website in hallways and posted sex myths from StayTeen.org in the school's restrooms.  They also sent a press release to the local newspapers describing their efforts and encouraging parents and teens to check out both TheNationalCampaign.org and StayTeen.org for information about the issue.

YWCA of Topeka’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) helped make the 2008 National Day a success.  In addition to providing an opportunity for teens to take the online National Day Quiz, TPP hosted a free public screening of Juno on May 7, 2008 at a locally-owned downtown Topeka establishment.  TPP’s Parenting Teen Educators were on-hand to facilitate a discussion immediately following the film.

Prince George's County, Maryland

Parents Empowering Families & Communities (PEFAC) worked with the Prince George's Hospital's Sexual Assault Center to host a May 3rd seminar, "Teen Dating 101: How to Respond to Sexual Pressure," for youth and their families. The seminar took place at the Spauldings Library located at 5811 Old Silver Hill Road in District Heights, MD. Attendees learned the importance of planning how to handle sexually charged situations, how to respond to sexual pressure, and tips for parents/grandparents to help their youth avoid teen pregnancy. Attendees were also told about the National Day Quiz and PEFAC will promoted the National Day Quiz via its e-newsletter.

MASSACHUSETTS

Lawrence, MA

The Adolescent Sibling Pregnancy Prevention (SIBS) Program of Family Service, Inc. did several things to recognize the 2008 National Day. They put up billboards showcasing facts on avoiding teen pregnany that also directed teens to the National Day Quiz. They also participated in a local health fair on May 17 where they distributed information about contraception, STDs, and abstinence and passed out National Day wristbands and pens. To get teens interested and engaged they planned something really fun: Sumo Suits! In addition, youth in the SIBS program created their own brochures for the event.

MICHIGAN

Holland, Michigan

The Ottawa County Health Department and the Ottawa County Youth Sexual Health Coalition held a Teen Forum at the Herrick Library on April 23, 2008. A panel of abstinent, sexually active, and parenting teens talked openly about teens, sex, and abstinence and the forum was open to all community members. They also worked with local high schools during the prom season to distribute information about the National Day, local teen pregnancy statistics, and their MySpace page. Along with having support from the schools, they joined forces with the business community to attach teen pregnancy and National Day information to receipts for tuxedo rentals, corsages, boutonnieres, and other prom-related items.

Hannibal, Missouri

The CHART Teen Task Force sponsored several events to promote the National Day. They placed an ad in their local newspaper promoting the National Day Quiz and sent out a press release promoting the National Day. The Hannibal High School newspaper, The Black and Red, ran the press release, as well as an ad about the National Day Quiz. The CHART Teen Task Force also paid for a television ad to air during the first week of May to promote taking the Quiz. They also worked with Hannibal High School, Hannibal Middle School, and Mark Twain Junior-Senior High School in Center, Missouri to allow students to take the National Day Quiz during class and members of the CHART Teen Task Force were present to coordinate events and answer students' questions.

St. Louis, Missouri

The Teen Pregnancy & Prevention Partnership promoted the National Day to their members and teen clients through their e-newsletter and recent membership meetings. They used the event to recognize local teens who are making healthy lifestyle choices and encouraging their peers to do the same. Through their Felicia Gayle Youth Leadership essay contest, they asked teens to describe what they think parents, teens, schools,and others should be doing differently to encourage teens to make healthy decisions and prevent pregnancy. The winner was announced at their May 9th meeting, attended by more than 40 individuals, school officials, and health and social service agencies. The event also featured their 4th annual “Youth Speak Out” presentation, where a panel of local teens shared their valuable insights about teen pregnancy prevention.

Zuni, New Mexico

The Pueblo of Zuni Education & Career Development Center – Tribal TANF program hosted a “Teen Pregnancy Prevention Awareness Walk” on Wednesday May 7, 2008. The starting point for the walk was the Zuni Tribal Building on State Hwy 53 and it followed the parade route back to the same point. Upon arrival back to the Zuni Tribal Building, there was a proclamation reading and balloon launch. A group of teen parents also shared their personal experiences through PSAs and in-school presentations for middle and high school students throughout the month of May.   With the high rise of teenage pregnancy on the Zuni reservation, they hope that these activities will impact their community and reduce teen pregnancies.

NEW YORK

Peekskill, New York

Hudson River HealthCare's Project L.I.F.E (Learning Information Fosters Empowerment) partnered with local community agencies for three community based events to promote Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month and the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. The  kickoff event took place on May 7 at Peekskill High School where students, staff, and community members were invited to take the National Day Quiz and participate in a discussion and group activity led by Hudson River HealthCare staff and health educators.  In partnership with the Lower Hudson Valley Perinatal Network's Community Health Education Day, they promoted the quiz by making computers available at Hudson River Healthcare on May 15th. They distibuted teen pregnancy information and print copies of the National Day Quiz. On Saturday May 17, staff also promoted the quiz and conduct outreach at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church's Healthy Living Health Fair.

NORTH CAROLINA

Burke County, North Carolina

The Burke County Health Department Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coordinator in Morganton, North Carolina passed out National Day wristbands to students in Burke County Schools and urged them to take the quiz.  Additional information on teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections was provided, too.  Also a mass e-mail with national, state and local statistics was sent to several hundred Burke County parents, teachers, counselors, school administrations, and other people who serve youth.  The Health Department also hosted a “Dinner, Dessert and Direct Talk” program on teen pregnancy trends and interventions in NC, especially in Burke County on May 27th.

Kernersville, North Carolina

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Theta Mu Sigma Chapter passed out National Day pens at a local high school to remind students of National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Theta Mu Sigma Chapter hoped that these pens would remind teens to think before they decide to become sexually active. Educational materials were also given to teens to help them to make better choices about sex, love, and relationships. The materials were avialble in both English and Spanish.

OHIO

Cincinnati, Ohio

The Postponing Sexual Involvement (PSI) program, a peer education program of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center sponsored by the City of Cincinnati, released the results of their annual PSI survey on the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy on May 7th. They issued a press release about local teen births dropping, a local teen pregnancy prevention program, and the National Day quiz. This press release garnered madia attention from their local FOX affiliate and The Cincinnati Enquirer. In addition, they recognized the many accomplishments of their teen leaders at their 18th annual teen leader banquet on May 8 at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Deleware County, Pennsylvania

The Delaware County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition partnered with two county high schools and a range of community groups to promote the National Campaign's quiz.  An estimated 175 students took the quiz as a result of the Coalition's efforts.  A full day of activities was sponsored at each of the two high schools, including presentations on topics related to teen pregnancy, information tables, give-aways and wireless laptop stations for taking the quiz.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Latta, South Carolina

The Teen Outreach Program at Latta High School conducted the 2nd Annual Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day Information Fair for the entire student body. Displays created by the participants provided information on teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, abstinence, birth control, local medical and counseling resources, date rape, etc. The Dillon County Health Department also provided brochures for all event participants. In cooperation with the school's newly formed video production club, the Teen Outreach Program provided public service announcments all month long over Latta High School's TV programming.

TENNESSEE

South Central Region, Tennessee

In the South Central Region of Tennessee, local teen peer education groups, in conjunction with area health councils, teamed up to promote and encourage teens to take the National Day Quiz.  Students displayed information about the quiz and other related materials in lunchrooms and placed posters in various locations throughout many of the schools.  In an effort to engage local faith-based groups in the region, bulletin inserts were given to churches to increase awareness among various youth in the community.  The local health departments provided newspapers with a press release to encourage all youth to participate in the Quiz.

TEXAS

Fort Worth, Texas

HIP N HOT Online Teen Magazine and K104FM Radio joined with the Martin Haven Fort Worth Boys & Girls Club for the 5th Annual National Teen Pregnancy Awareness Day. Hundreds of teens and parents participate in the National Day Quiz and recieved incentives, including gift certifiacates and game day vouchers for the Dallas Desperados, to encourage teens to take the quiz. K104FM Radio aired audio PSAs throughout May to let teens know about the National Day Quiz.

 

San Antonio, Texas

Project WORTH will be worked with the City Public Library Department to host a May 7th press conference.  The press conference took place in the "Youth Wired" section of the city's downtown library.  Elected officials, community leaders, and over 20 high school students were present to take the National Day Quiz after the press conference.  Throughout May, Univision Television aired a Spanish-language 30-second PSA (watch it below) that encouraged parents to talk to their children about values, relationships, love and sex.  Project WORTH also worked with Univision radio station 98.5FM, The BEAT to air a 30 second PSA promoting "Take the Quiz."

VIRGINIA

Alexandria, Virginia

The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP) is sponsoring a dramatic performance by City at Peace on Saturday, May 17th at the Cora Kelly Recreation Center.  The performance, "Avoiding Plan B", explores the lives and relationships of a group of teenagers as they approach high school graduation and deal with the perceptions and implications of sex in their lives.

Throughout the month of May, the "From Books to Bottles" Photography Display will be showcased in various locations. Over the past few months members of the Alexandria Youth Council, in partnerships with ACAP, Alexandria City Public Schools, and Critical Exposure, took photos, interviewed teen parents, and created a display to increase awareness of teen pregnancy in Alexandria.  Visit www.alexgetreal.com for updates on locations.

On May 13th, the Mayor of the City of Alexandria, on behalf of the Alexandria City Council, will proclaim May as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.  During this city council meeting, youth from teen pregnancy prevention programs will discuss the benefits of these programs and youth council members will discuss the "From Books to Bottles" photography project.

Other events include displays at local libraries, outreach activities at the local community college, a City employee parent workshopentitled "Let's Talk about Sex," and visits to various schools for youth to take the National Day quiz.

Chesapeake, Virginia

On the National Day, the Chesapeake Community Services Board held a community forum for professionals, parents, teens and individuals who have an interest in teenage pregnancy prevention.  They discussed opportunites for improving educational outcomes for teen parents and hope that their efforts will raise public awareness of the larger issue of preventing teenage pregnancy in the community .

The Vancouver School District held an event where teen parents spoke to high school health classes about the reality of being a teen parent. The panel was called "No Kidding: It is Hard to Be a Teen Parent." At the event, they distributed literature on issues related to teen pregnancy.

The United Way of Greater Milwaukee celebrated the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy by launching a new website, www.babycanwait.com  This new website provides Milwaukee’s young people with sexual health resources and information that will allow them to make healthy and informed decisions. The website includes a list of healthcare providers that work with young people, including their availability, location, and bus routes that serve their offices, information about young people’s rights, and links to local social service, health, and educational resources.
